I have a friend who is currently dating someone management at her company. She’s convinced herself that this is a good idea because they’re in “love”. She doesn’t think the fact that they’re working at the same company could cause a problem for her professionally. Bad move, girl.
Personally, I think that the idea of true love isn’t worth it when you think of all the drawbacks.
When it comes to the workplace women don’t just face inequality in pay. They also face inequality when it comes to failed romances.
Yup, women even lose more when these ill-advised romances fizzle out. As a whole men are more likely to keep their jobs and women are more likely to get fired. I’d probably venture to guess that it has something to do with the fact that women are valued for their sexual piety and men are congratulated for their promiscuity. Meaning that your workplace reputation is probably over the second anyone finds out what’s going on. Is this fair? Definitely not, but it doesn’t mean that it’s not a very real risk.
Dating a coworker is very unprofessional, long hours and close quarters may have you tempted to opt for a more convenient arrangement but most companies have policies against cozying up with coworkers. This is the case for a variety of reasons
This is the case for a variety of reasons. Office romances are often distracting for coworkers and when the inevitable breakup happens things just go from awkward to incredibly messy. Breakups with someone that you have to see on a daily basis only leads to the mother of all breakups. You can’t avoid that person and it’s going to be awkward for eight hours a day for the rest of your remaining time at the company. Sorry, but that’s just what happens.
Or even worse….if someone gets fired then what? Does the other person quit over the principle of the matter? Would you be upset if your significant other just remained there and stayed silent without defending your relationshIp? There are a lot of really hard to answer questions in this scenario and there’s not likely to be a good or easy answer.
I think this is one of those no-win situations that you should definitely try to avoid at all costs.
